I arrive

and sit down on a chair that is somewhere

in the middle of the space .

Something begins,

anchors the experience of the moment in my memory.

There is a picture projected on the wall of a beach and the sea.

It is almost summer

and the weather is warm.

A boat appears in the horizon.

And so

I am on the beach and sitting on a chair

L’œuvre chorégraphique I am standing est une expérience physique et psychologique qui s’appuie sur des éléments puisés dans la vie quotidienne de chacun. Une femme se tient debout au milieu d’une pièce, tête baissée ; l’impression qu’elle dégage est à la fois celle de la fragilité et de l’invincibilité. A partir de là, le public a la faculté d’investir l’espace, de faire le tour de la scène, d’observer, de s’étonner… Dans le même temps, des textes de quelques mots destinés à préciser le contexte de l’action sont projetés au mur. A sa grande surprise, le spectateur pourra être amené à se rendre compte qu’il fixe non pas une danseuse inconnue, mais que c’est sur lui-même et sur sa part d’humanité qu’il est en train de poser un regard introspectif. Salmivaara parvient à ce résultat à travers une gestuelle économe et strictement maitrisée, invitant le spectateur à faire des allers-retours successifs entre le réel et l’imaginaire, la dimension physique et spirituelle ainsi qu’entre le « moi », le « toi » et le « nous ».
Installée à Paris où elle exerce son art, Salmivaara (née en 1978 à Rauma) signe des œuvres chorégraphiques construites sur une interaction en temps réel entre l’artiste et son public, les performances de cette danseuse-chorégraphe ayant en effet souvent pour point de départ la situation en cours, à savoir le spectacle en lui-même. L’artiste invite ainsi les spectateurs d’une part à entrer dans un jeu où, tour à tour, chacun sera celui qui regarde et celui qui est regardé, d’autre part à prendre conscience du fait que l’espace scénique est ici un espace partagé. Quant aux situations mises en scène et aux gestes de l’artiste, ils peuvent tout aussi bien tantôt se répéter à l’identique, tantôt ne se produire strictement qu’une seule fois. Les performances de Salmivaara ont souvent été qualifiées d’intenses de par le degré de concentration que déploie l’artiste, mais aussi de méditatives voire parfois d’hilarantes.

Aimless hanging out with friends – Autuasta oleilua ystävien kanssa on tanssiesitys. Keskustelun lailla kehittyvä rakenne etenee kevyesti ajassa ja tilassa. Fyysinen tajunnanvirta johdattelee neljää esiintyjää tilapäisten mielleyhtymien läpi. Alati vaihtuvat asetelmat lähestyvät eri aiheita, pääasiaksi nousevat vuorovaikutus ja jakaminen – ajan viettäminen yhdessä.

"La performance débute à l’entrée du public dans la salle. L’accueil de celui-ci par la figure de l’interprète est le commencement d’une chorégraphie entre le texte écrit, les corps, l’espace et le placement du public qui graduellement s’intègrent ainsi à la totalité de la performance. Ce projet explore les apparences parallèles ou potentielles.

Je souhaite créer une œuvre qui soit une expérience à la fois physique et imaginaire pour le public. La disposition du projet oscille constamment entre performance et installation, et pourrait également être décrite comme un voyage introspectif au cœur d’un spectacle à l’espace vide, ou comme une expérience d’intégration.."

A l’heure où Mains d’Œuvres fête ses 10 ans, 10 années dédiées aux artistes émergents et à leurs expérimentations, nous avons eu envie de mettre à l’honneur les compagnies qui sont à l’œuvre tout au long de l’année.
Né des cheminements et circulations des artistes résidents, ce festival reflète la diversité des univers et des synergies qui se croisent dans un lieu de création. Chaque proposition sera pensée pour cet événement avec des pièces inédites ou en cours de maturation. Chaque artiste, à sa manière, amènera un vent de curiosité et d’émerveillement, une respiration pour se sentir vivant.
Ainsi, Mains d’Œuvres persiste à croire qu’on peut changer, ne serait-ce qu’un peu, notre monde et la manière de vivre nos vies ; que là où le temps et l’espace rétrécissent, où les élans sont contraints par le trop comptable ou le trop barbare, il reste encore de la place pour une pause poétique.

In the beginning they bought the furniture from a bankrupt business, some pencils, and a stack of white paper and secluded themselves in a workspace. Time started ticking.

This interpretation of a ‘desert island situation’ created the context and the material limitations for their adventure. Motivated by survival mechanisms and a do-it-yourself spirit, they took ‘crisis’ as their departure for Hope.
The result is a choreography in which each element feeds back into another. A Universe in which the changing arrangements of the bodies, microphones, sound barriers and speakers create an impact on the audience's perception.

COLLABORATION is part two in Inari Salmivaara’s performance series (THIS TIME, ANY PLACE). For each part she will invite different artists to reflect with her and create work around the theme of hope.

Viewmaster: is a concept created by two dancers and an architect. Heike Langsdorf, Laurent Liefooghe & Ula Sickle created the machine and developed both an installation and a live performance using it. Huis a/d Werf got involved in the second phase of the project: The Series, in which other artists are invited to work with tool.The project is a potent cocktail of issues such as ‘the act of using’, ‘the sharing and producing of knowledge’ and ‘seeing as thinking’.

For Huis en Festival a/d Werf the tool functioned as a curatorial device: all issues evolved from the object, the tool. A tool which helps me think about the ideal of phenomenological presence and the gaps within this concept. Hopefully for both artist and audience a tool to create awareness of perception.

Inari Salmivaara is a Finnish artist who lives and works in Paris. She is fascinated by the factors that influence our perception, both in theatre and life. Salmvaara wants to evoke something personal from the audience but at the same time present them a clear and complete mechanism that can be observed. It is precisely because of this inter- est in evoking a ‘real’ emotion and showing a constellation of agencies operating behind it that Inari Salmivaara was invited for The Series. In «Etude» She uses the Viewmaster as a metaphor for avoiding the traps of becoming a spectacle in the ‘Debordian sense’.

«Etude» an invitation to see . . Created in collaboration with Pedro Ines and Tashi Iwaoka, this mini triptych explores the way in which we perceive the world around us and attempts to grasp the reality that exists behind the subjective perceptions of it.The center of the work is the massive viewmaster machine that is placed in the center of the room. The performance invites the public first to see the room and then the machine itself.

By using the optical effects of the viewmaster machine and later with the help of video projections, the performance creates a parallax view and reflects the viewmaster back onto itself, in an attempt to understand the subjective conditions of our access to reality...

Kunstenares Inari Salmivaara komt oorspronkelijk uit Finland. Nadat ze jarenlang in Amsterdam had gewoond is ze onlangs verhuisd naar Parijs. Ze studeerde op verschillende dansscholen in Finland en Nederland en studeerde in 2004 af aan de School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. In dat jaar ontving ze bovendien de 'Theateropdracht' prijs van het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds. Hierna werkte ze bij verschillende productiehuizen. Het werk van Inari Salmivaara is een combinatie van gelijke delen fysieke aanwezigheid, beweging, geluid, tekst en video en ze werkt vaak samen met kunstenaars uit verschillende disciplines.

Begin 2010 onderzocht Inari Salmivaara de mogelijkheden van de installatie en 'magic tool' Viewmaster in Huis a/d Werf. Haar performance THE SPECTACLE, het laatste deel in de serie 5 IN A WORK NOT CITED, was te zien op Festival a/d Werf 2010.

Vanaf dit jaar werkt ze ook aan de serie (THIS TIME, ANY PLACE). Het tweede deel ontwikkelt ze in december 2010 en januari 2011 gedurende een residentie in Huis a/d Werf, gevolgd door een verblijf bij Mains d'Œuvres in Parijs. Deze serie is een voortdurend project waarin de traditionele tentoonstellings- en theaterruimtes worden gebruikt om boodschappen over 'hoop' te verzenden.

Focus sur la scène genevoise avec le Festival EXTRA BALL - CENTRE CULTUREL SUISSE PARIS du 29/09 au 02/10
Mains d’Œuvres fête la fin de résidence de Perrine Valli par un temps fort suisse et convie à cet évènement festif les artistes qui tiennent la scène haute à Genève, pour la première fois tous réunis à Paris.

Pour bien commencer la journée, une table-ronde franco-suisse pour débattre de la question de l’identité nationale dans des univers artistiques de plus en plus sans frontières.

INARI SALMIVAARA - THE SPECTACLE

Ce projet en 5 parties tente de rêver et de donner corps à l’utopie d’un spectacle parfait. L’utopie dans ce projet est considérée comme une structure de pensée complète à l’intérieur de laquelle les mécanismes existent et fonctionnent de manière indépendante tout en portant la structure et le sens. Chaque partie aborde un aspect différent du spectacle – la première, la construction globale, la deuxième, le cadre, la troisième, le contenu et le sensible, la quatrième, l’aspect visuel et la disparition consentie de l’incrédulité. Enfin, la cinquième partie, présentée ici, revient avec une approche encyclopédique sur toutes ces parties.

Ce projet est un manifeste pour la simplicité de ce qui est. Il vise à pointer les limites de la pensée et de mettre en exécution le développement d’une seule pensée à la fois. Tout ce qu’un êtrehumain pense ou fait ne peut pas être indifférent à ses pairs.

En résidence d’accueil création à partir de septembre 2010

Originaire de la Finlande, la chorégraphe et performeuse vit et travaille aujourd’hui à Paris après plusieurs années passées à Amsterdam, où elle s’est formée à la New Dance Development School. En 2006, elle créé "Comedy for Particular Universes" présenté au Spring Danse Festival . De 2007 à 2009, elle fait partie du programme Advanced Choreographic Explorations, initié par Dansmakers Amsterdam. C’est dans ce contexte qu’elle commence à travailler à ce projet.

En 2010, elle commence la série THIS TIME, ANY PLACE, qu’elle va développer durant sa résidence à Mains d’Œuvres à partir de janvier 2011. Le travail d’Inari mèle présence physique, mouvement, texte et vidéo et elle collabore souvent avec des artistes d’autres disciplines.

The Series:
After touring since 2007 with a performance & installation for which they developed the illusion-
machine “Viewmaster”, Heike Langsdorf, Laurent Liefooghe and Ula Sickle now offer a chance
for other artists to explore the possibilities of this ‘magic‘ tool. “The Series” invites artists from
different disciplines to use the Viewmaster to produce a new work. Works emerging can range
from cinematic, performative, visual and even auditive attempts to make use of the tool. Each
time the Viewmaster moves to another residency location, a new work is added to the series
by a guest artist.

The first installment will be co-produced by Huis a/d Werf in Utrecht, where Finnish choreographer
Inari Salmivaara will explore the box during a two-week residency in February 2010. The workshop
and residency will be accompanied by a seminar for the PHD students of the Media and
Performance department of the University of Utrecht on the topic of ‘Liveness’.

The Spectacle is the fifth and last part of the performance series “5 IN A WORK NOT CITED” by Inari Salmivaara. It is the story of an expedition that set out to look for the perfect performance.
The performance zooms into captured moments, dialogues, movements, images and sounds from its own process and places them into a theatrical constellation. The participants retrace and share their experiences of the journey. The performance is a poetic documentation of their search.

“5 IN A WORK NOT CITED” is a five-part project which attempts to describe and execute a utopia for a performance. Utopia in this project is considered as a complete (thought-) construction in which separate mechanisms function and exist independently whilst supporting the structure and its meaning ( a performance and its theme).
Each part of the series concentrates on a different aspect of a performance. The first part on overall structure, the second part on ambience, the third part on content and emotion and the fourth part on visuality and the suspension of disbelief. The fifth and last part of the project will be, as well as an independent work, a symbiosis of all the systems and mechanisms developed during the previous parts of the project, intending to create an encyclopedic view on this project.


The project is a manifesto for simplicity and capacity for what exists. The intention is to find and reveal the limits of thinking and to execute the development of a single thought.


Anything a human being does or thinks cannot be indifferent for human beings

4th PART

The performance is a journey to a garden. It departs from the performance space and invites the audience to a guided tour into a garden. During the tour the audience has the possibility to observe different animals and sites. In the garden there is also a theater.
By repeating the material, the performance constructs and travels through three different states of its space revealing what is, what is not and what could be happening at the very moment.
The “4th part” plays with the mechanisms for presence, absence and suspension of disbelief in theater and explores the possibilities in performance. The performance is based on the notions on the act of perceiving- It examines the power of mind in perception and attempts to employ the dynamic gaze/vision and to reveal the role of the memory in the act of perceiving something as something.
