“First I would like to say that I really would have liked to be here tonight, already because it is my father's birthday and the theme of this performance is important for me. Anyhow I am not able to come ,and therefore I write this letter.” (excerpt of the letter)

“LETTER PIECE” vol. Paris is a mini- triptych about distance.
The performance doesn't tell stories about distance but accepts distance as its condition and seeks to create a positive experience of distance, from distance.

“LETTER PIECE” vol.Paris is the first part of a series “this time , any place” which presents artistic registrations emerging from notions of hope and constructive optimism.

“Letter piece” Vol.Paris ( kirje)

“Letter piece” Vol.Paris ( kirje) on ensimmainen osa teossarjaa This time, any place, joka tutkii, keraa ja arkistoi toivon esiintymista maailmassa.

I believe that to continue living in these current times we need a spark of hope , utopian thinking and constructive actions to create -Something that makes sense and has the prospect of development and which allows us to perceive its reason(s), -Something that without exploiting or ignoring the inequality in the current world manages to evoke laughter and perhaps even manifest new models for thinking and action -Something which still induces, preserves and gives value for individual experiences and desires.- Something which springs from simplicity and the immanent conditions of the situation/the moment.

5 IN A WORK NOT CITED
“the spectacle”
by Inari Salmivaara

The Spectacle is the fifth and last part of the performance series “5 IN A WORK NOT CITED” by Inari Salmivaara. It is the story of an expedition that set out to look for the perfect performance.
The performance zooms into captured moments, dialogues, movements, images and sounds from its own process and places them into a theatrical constellation. The participants retrace and share their experiences of the journey. The performance is a poetic documentation of their search.

“The Spectacle” is created in collaboration with Viljam Nybacka , Pedro Ines, and Lucia Lawaai
and it is produced by DansWerkPlaats Amsterdam

At times all I need is a brief glimpse, an opening in the midst of an incongruous landscape, a glint of lights in the fog, the dialogue of two passerby meeting in the crowd, and I think that, setting out from there, I will put together, piece by piece, the perfect city, made of fragments mixed with the rest, of instants separated by intervals, of signals one sends out, not knowing who receives them. If I tell you that the city that my journey tends is discontinuous in space and time, now scattered, now more condensed. You must not believe the search , for it can stop. 5 IN A WORK NOT CITED/PERFORMANCE SERIES

Utopia –an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect.
(The Oxford Dictionary of English)

“5 IN A WORK NOT CITED” is a five-part project which attempts to describe and execute a utopia for a performance. Utopia in this project is considered as a complete (thought-) construction in which separate mechanisms function and exist independently whilst supporting the structure and its meaning ( a performance and its theme).
Each part of the series concentrates on a different aspect of a performance. The first part on overall structure, the second part on ambience, the third part on content and emotion and the fourth part on visuality and the suspension of disbelief. The fifth and last part of the project will be, as well as an independent work, a symbiosis of all the systems and mechanisms developed during the previous parts of the project, intending to create an encyclopedic view on this project.

The project is a manifesto for simplicity and capacity for what exists. The intention is to find and reveal the limits of thinking and to execute the development of a single thought.

Anything a human being does or thinks cannot be indifferent for human beings

4th PART

The performance is a journey to a garden. It departs from the performance space and invites the audience to a guided tour into a garden. During the tour the audience has the possibility to observe different animals and sites. In the garden there is also a theater.

By repeating the material, the performance constructs and travels through three different states of its space revealing what is, what is not and what could be happening at the very moment.
The “4th part” plays with the mechanisms for presence, absence and suspension of disbelief in theater and explores the possibilities in performance. The performance is based on the notions on the act of perceiving- It examines the power of mind in perception and attempts to employ the dynamic gaze/vision and to reveal the role of the memory in the act of perceiving something as something.

TRIO (third part)

TRIO -“group of three identical or similar objects, or a grouping of three
persons for a common purpose.”

The third part of the series is a performance about emotions, content and action, and their relationship to each other.
In the performance the main story unfolds to several small scenes which all approach the themes of the performance differently- creating a spectrum of theatrical acts.
The performance plays with what is/was there in the performance space- an object on the table becomes a motive for a theatrical act, thought becomes a song, dance becomes a monologue. Through systematic manipulation by muting, emphasizing or replacing words, actions or sounds, the scenes in the performance get a color of their own.
The content of the main story, which is the story of the performance itself, is broken into particles of information.

DUET (second part)

“The eye sees what the ear hears” David Lynch

The second part of the project is a duet about the mechanisms of ambience. It attempts by sonic and physical actions to steer the ambience of the performance and at the same time challenge audience's perception of the current moment, testing if what you see is what you hear, or is what you hear what you see. The performance operates in two interrelated levels of sound and action.
In the performance each action is executed to create a sound; each sound is placed in space, the space changes through the executed actions.

SOLO (first part)

“Utopias are not impossible, but to create one or even to think about one, it is necessary to get inside and stop playing around with little dreams.”

The first part of the project is a solo, which describes and executes a structure of a performance, so that the performance simultaneously introduces itself, as well as the performer, and the whole series. The performance is a solo that peeks into, and executes the thinking of the maker and the performer whilst operating as an introduction/first part to the project that dives into and executes the thinking of its participants.
